Frequently Asked Questions

What is KVDF?

The Kurula Varkey Design Forum, since its inception in 2000, has strived to critically question the discipline of architecture and its manifestations at the given time through student projects as take-off points. We invite undergraduate student projects from over 100 architecture schools across Asia, of which a few are selected as generators of the discourse. The forum further invites practitioners, academicians, and young graduates from across the globe to participate in curated discussions exploring pressing subjects and themes vital to the discipline.

Why is the forum being held online?

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the forum will be conducted online whilst retaining its characteristic intensity, probing nature, and depth of discussion, from the 26th to 31st July, 2021.

Who is eligible to send in their projects?

Students who have finished their final year design project between June 2019 to June 2021 are invited to send in their entries in the specified format.

What is the procedure of submitting entries?

Last date for sending in entries is  23rd June, 2021. Participants are invited to send in a PDF Presentation through the website link (kvdforum.in/submit) with a maximum of six 16:9 ratio panels (not exceeding 2500 px) describing your project in terms of programme, process, intentions, challenges, and the outcome under the purview of the theme. Any form of representation within these 6 panels is accepted. Text (font size, 12pt and above) should not exceed 100 words per panel. Please restrict your entry to a maximum size of 5 MB. The first panel of the PDF presentation should be a written or a diagrammatic description (not more than 300 words) describing the project through the lens of the theme; clearly explaining its web of relationships and your position in it.

Is my submission the final entry that will be presented in the Forum?

Please note that your entry is not the final presentation. Upon selection, our team will get in touch with you to discuss the requirements for the forum.

When will I get to know whether my project has been selected?

Selected participants will be informed by the first week of July, 2021.

What is the intention of the forum? Is it a jury or a competition?

The forum is not a jury or a competition, but rather a dialogue to understand the diverse directions emerging in the discipline of architecture through student projects.

How are the projects selected?

Prior to the forum, an expert panel will be invited to select projects that are most appropriate for the discussion through the lens of the theme.

What is the basis for selection of projects?

The forum being a space for candid and thought provoking thematic conversations/debates, the project’s potential in bringing out these thematic questions will be the basis for selection. The 300 word description, part of the submission requirements, should indicate the potential of their project in generating a discussion around this year’s theme.

Are all projects submitted selected for the forum?

We invite undergraduate final year student projects from various architecture schools across South east Asia, of which a few are selected as generators of the discourse to curate discussions inviting practitioners and academicians from across the globe.

Can I submit my project if my project viva has not been done due to college closure in light of COVID-19?

Yes you can submit your project, as long as your college can provide an attestation for it on selection of project.
